PARLIAMENTARY MEETING
HIGHLIGHTS THE POLITICS OF WATER

On 19 and 20 March 2006, the Parliament of Mexico convened the first world meeting of legislators to discuss the question of water. Some 100 members of parliament, primarily from Latin America, met in the margins of the Fourth World Water Forum that took place in Mexico City.

The parliamentary meeting addressed questions such as climate change and water management, protection, sanitation and distribution.

Echoing divergences in the World Water Forum, the debate at the parliamentary event was marked by sharp differences of opinion on the issues of privatisation of water resources and whether or not the entitlement to water should be considered a fundamental human right.

The IPU was represented by its Secretary General who offered the Union's support in following up on the outcome of the meeting.

The meeting concluded by calling for further meetings of members of parliamentary committees dealing with water issues to discuss a future agenda for parliaments to ensure clean water for all.
