At a meeting held on Capitol Hill under the aegis of the IPU and the House Democracy Assistance Commission, IPU President Pier-Ferdinando Casini joined with HDAC Chairman, Representative David Dreier, and HDAC Ranking Member, Representative David Price, in underscoring the need for support by the international community for strengthening parliamentary institutions in countries emerging from crisis and conflict.   [ Full story ... ]


red cubeAfrica's development needs are dramatically illustrated during IPU Assembly in Kenya
While hundreds of members of parliament from around the world were attending the 114th IPU Assembly in Nairobi, famine and malnutrition were causing tremendous suffering in drought-affected North-Eastern Kenya and bordering countries. A Parliamentary Caucus took place to review parliamentary action against the HIV/AIDS pandemic, against the backdrop of the High-level meeting of the United Nations on HIV/AIDS earlier this month in New York. The meeting, a joint initiative of IPU, UNAIDS, and UNDP, was attended by MPs from 30 countries, many of whom were chairs or members of specialised parliamentary committees.   [ Full story ... ]

Learning lessons from the past, setting standards for the future
Guide on parliaments and democracy in the 21st centuryAt the initiative of the IPU, three new guides for democratic standards in the political sphere have recently been made available to the parliamentary community worldwide. As part of an integrated approach to standard-setting, these guides are designed to serve as effective tools for focusing attention on shared democratic objectives.
