How to export PARLINE data in CSV format?

The comma-separated value (CSV) format, also known as a comma-separated list or comma-separated variables, is a file type that stores tabular data. It is often used to exchange data between applications and has become a pseudo standard throughout the computer industry.

To export PARLINE data in CSV format:

  1. On the At a glance or Toolbox pages of PARLINE, select geographic scope and database fields to be exported. In the example below, the names and addresses of all speakers of parliaments of European countries have been selected.

Examples 1

  1. Use Export to CSV button to create the file and then save it or open using an application programme of your choice, such as Microsoft® Excel or Microsoft® Access.

How to export PARLINE data into Microsoft Excel?

  1. Use the procedure described above to select geographic scope and database fields of PARLINE to be exported.
  2. Use Export to Excel button to create the file and then save it or open using Microsoft® Excel XP or later.
  3. To import PARLINE data into Microsoft® Excel 2000 or earlier versions, use the special procedure described below.

How to export data if you are using Microsoft Excel 2000 or earlier versions?

The Export to Excel feature in the At a glance and Toolbox sections relies on XML format which is only compatible with Microsoft® Excel XP or later versions. If you are using Microsoft® Excel 2000 or earlier versions, the Export to Excel feature will not work correctly and you must resort to an alternative export procedure as described below.

To export data to Microsoft® Excel 2000 or earlier versions, you must first export the data in CSV (comma separated value) file format and only then open the data in Excel.

To do so:

  1. Select geographic scope, structure of parliament and database fields to be exported from PARLINE
  2. Use the Export to CSV button to save data as a .csv file
  3. Change the file extension of the saved file to .txt
  4. Use Excel to open the saved .txt file, making sure that all file formats (*.*) are allowed
  5. When Excel Text Import Wizard opens, select "Delimited", then click "Next"(as in the illustration below)

  6. In the dialogue box that follows, select "Comma" as the delimiter (as in the illustration below)

  7. Click "Finish" to open the file in Excel, and work with it as necessary

How can I know which version of Microsoft Excel I have?

If you are not sure what version of Microsoft® Excel is installed on your computer:

  1. Open Excel
  2. In its topmost menu bar, click on the fall-down menu called "Help" or "?"
  3. Click on "About Microsoft Excel". The version of the programme in indicated in the window.
