BACKGROUND
Dates of election / renewal (from/to) 27 April 2014
Purpose of elections The VMRO-DPMNE-led coalition of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski took 61 seats in the 123-member Assembly of the Republic, five more than the previous elections in 2011. Its coalition partner in the outgoing government, the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI), increased its share from 15 to 19. The coalition led by the SDSM under Mr. Zoran Zaev saw its share reduced from 42 to 34. Parliamentary elections were held in parallel with the run-off presidential elections, in which Mr. Gjorge Ivanov (VMRO-DPMNE) was re-elected, defeating SDSM’s Mr. Stevo Pendarovski.

The early parliamentary elections were triggered by a disagreement within the governing coalition over the presidential candidate.

During the election campaign, VMRO-DPMNE, in power since 2006, promised to grant aid totalling one million euros to businesses to stimulate job creation. The SDSM accused the VMRO-DPMNE of having increased the gap between the rich and the poor and promised the "restoration" of the middle class. The DUI urged ethnic Albanians (who make up a quarter of the population) to boycott the presidential elections while encouraging them to participate in the parliamentary polls. The SDSM stated that it would not recognize the entire electoral process, both parliamentary and presidential. The observers from the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights stated that both elections were "efficiently administered" but "the majority of monitored media was largely biased in favour of the ruling party".

Prior to the first parliamentary session of 10 May, the VMRO-DPMNE and the DUI agreed to form a new coalition government. On 12 May, Mr. Ivanov was sworn in for a new five-year term in a session boycotted by most opposition parties. He subsequently tasked Mr. Gruevski with forming a new government.
