On 19 June 2012
the Constitutional Court invalidated two decrees issued by the Emir in December 2011
one dissolving the legislature in December 2011 and the other calling for new elections in February 2012. In accordance with the court ruling
the legislature elected in February 2012 was dissolved and the legislature elected in May 2009 reinstated. The reinstated National Assembly would assume legislative power until new parliamentary elections are called.
However
Parliament was unable to meet for lack of quorum
as opposition MPs refused to attend. On 3 October
the Cabinet asked the Emir to dissolve the National Assembly again. On 7 October
the Emir dissolved parliament
paving the way for fresh elections to be held within 60 days. |
