Chamber:
  Landtag

Dates of elections / renewal (from/to):

  24 October 1993

Purpose of elections:

Elections were held for all the seats in Parliament following the premature dissolution of this body on 15 September 1993. General elections had previously been held in February 1993.

Background and outcome of elections:

The preceding general elections of February 1993 had given the largest share of Landtag seats (12) to Progressive Citizens' Party (FBP), which thus turned the tables on its traditional rival, the Fatherland Union (VU). The centre-right VU had held the parliamentary majority for 15 years.

On 15 September 1993, the Head of State, Prince Hans-Adam II, dissolved the Landtag the day after it had approved a motion of no confidence in Prime Minister Markus Büchel by 17 votes to 8. The motion, initiated by members of Mr. Büchel's own FBP, was accompanied by demands for dismissal of the Prime Minister but the Prince opted for dissolution and new elections instead.

The VU, led by outgoing Deputy Premier Mario Frick, and the FBP, whose list was headed by Mr. Josef Biedermann, advocated similar policies favouring a free market economy, the move towards European integration and revision of the country's Constitution. Altogether 69 candidates contested the 25 seats.

On a polling day marked by another turnout, VU regained its leading parliamentary position by capturing an absolute-majority total of 13 seats. The environmentalist Free List (FL) party, for its part, returned only one member. Given this outcome, VU and FBP renewed their historic governing coalition, the five-member Cabinet (including two women) headed by Prime Minister Frick, 28, being sworn in on 15 December.
