Purpose of elections:
	Elections were held for all the seats in Parliament on the normal expiry of the members' term of office.
Background and outcome of elections:
	The 1996 elections were the second since independence was attained in 1991. Main contenders for the 90 National Assembly seats were the ruling Liberal Democrats (LDS) of Prime Minister (since April 1992) Janez Drnovsek; their coalition partners in the outgoing minority Government, the Christian Democrats (SKD); the right-wing Slovene People's Party (SLS); and the Social Democratic Party (SDS). Altogether 24 parties and 1,300 candidates (including 242 women) were in the running. Generally speaking, all groups agreed on the principal issues of Slovenia's joining the European Union and NATO, but they differed as to the pace for seeking these affiliations. On polling day, the Assembly seats were once again fragmented among seven different parties led, as four years earlier, by the centre-left LDS. With only 25 seats (a gain of three), it topped the SLS, which replaced the SKD in second place. In this context, Mr. Drnovsek was reproposed as Prime Minister and ultimately elected to the post by Parliament on 9 January 1997. The newly-elected Assembly had held its inaugural session on 28 November.
