IPU deeply concerned by latest developments in Thailand

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is deeply concerned by the latest developments in Thailand, including the imposition of martial law, and is calling for a peaceful and political solution to the crisis in the country.

"IPU has been worried by the profound polarization of Thai politics over many years and is alarmed by the deepening crisis in recent months," said IPU President Abdelwahad Radi.  "For the democratic future of the country, it is critical that all sides urgently engage in a genuine political dialogue and find common ground on the way ahead in the interests of the Thai people."

Working closely with the Thai parliament and providing it support on several issues for many years, IPU has also been engaging the Thai authorities on cases involving the human rights of MPs. Recently, IPU's Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians deplored a tendency in Thailand to resort to using the judicial system to resolve essential political matters. This has made it all the more difficult to ensure the independence of the three branches of government - the executive, parliament and judiciary.

Recalling the inalienable right of people everywhere to take part in government, directly or through their chosen representatives, President Radi called for free and fair elections to take place as soon as possible.

"An elected parliament is a key pillar of democracy. It is not only essential that elections are organized quickly, but for all parties to respect their outcome," he added.
