Seminar organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights

It is important for the people’s representatives - parliamentarians - to ensure development with a view to the self-fulfilment of their constituents. By promoting and guaranteeing respect for human rights, MPs can help realize the right to development. It is thus imperative for parliaments to become more involved in the implementation of this right so that it becomes a reality for all.

This is why the Inter-Parliamentary Union, together with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, is organizing an information seminar on “Promoting the right to development: The role of parliament” on 20 October in the margins of the 125th IPU Assembly in Bern. The purpose of the seminar is twofold: sensitize parliamentarians to the inextricable link between human rights and development and encourage them to promote enhanced application of human rights, a prerequisite of the right to development.
