The Least Developed Countries, 46 in total, remain far behind the rest of the world in terms of human development and economic prospects. Only a handful of these countries have graduated from the LDC category since 2011, when the Istanbul Programme of Action for the LDCs came into effect.
In cooperation with the Shura Council of Qatar, the IPU will organize a Parliamentary Forum on the eve of the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries in Doha, from 23 to 27 January, 2022, to galvanize parliamentary action in support of these countries.
The Parliamentary Forum (22 January, 2022) is the culmination of a year-long “parliamentary track” to the LDC5 in view of a new 10-year Programme of Action for the LDCs.
The Forum will cater to the members of parliament attending the LDC5 as part of their national delegations. It will conclude with a Parliamentary Message to the main UN conference.
NOTE: The United Nations is encouraging all national delegations to the LDC5 to include representation from their respective parliaments. Funding will be available to support the travel of one MP from each LDC. Mindful of the on-going pandemic, the UN organizers will put in place strong measures to protect the health and safety of all conference participants. Parliamentarians interested in participating in the LDC5 need to coordinate with their national delegations as soon as possible.
