Former Supreme Court lawyer Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury is the first-ever woman to take the top job in the Bangladeshi parliament and also the youngest.
Dr Hanan Al-Ahmadi, who has a PhD in public health, was one of the first women ever appointed to the Saudi parliament, the Shura Council, in January 2013. She believes a positive shift in public opinion towards women is now under way.
Dr Amal Abdullah Al Qubaisi was the first woman in the United Arab Emirates Parliament and the first female deputy speaker of the Federal National Council. She made history in 2013 when she chaired a House session, an occasion she described as a great honour. This is an edited version of an iKNOW politics interview conducted in November 2013.
