International Days

The International Day of Democracy is celebrated around the world on 15 September each year. It was established at the IPU’s request through a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly in 2007.

Its sister day, the International Day of Parliamentarism, is celebrated worldwide on 30 June. It was also established at the IPU’s request through a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly in 2018. The day marks the date of the IPU’s foundation in 1889.

Both days are opportunities to review the state of democracy and parliaments around the world. The IPU encourages its Members to mark these occasions with events and celebrations.

Hundreds of parliamentary events have been organized by our Members since the days were instituted. Initiatives have included exhibitions, commemorative stamps, photo competitions, workshops for children, live televised debates, radio phone-ins and meetings with civil society organizations.
