on the occasion of the 55th session of the Commission on the Status of Women

During the 55th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), whose priority theme this year is the Access and participation of women and girls to education, training, science and technology, including for the promotion of women’s equal access to full employment and decent work, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), are organising a parliamentary event entitled The Role of Parliaments in promoting access and participation of women and girls to education, training, science and technology.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 23 February 2011, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
in room 6 at UN Headquarters in New York.

The meeting will take stock of the situation, identify challenges faced by women and girls in accessing education and training, science and technology and highlight parliamentary mechanisms and actions parliaments can take to overcome these barriers. In so doing, the meeting will provide an opportunity to contribute to the debates at the CSW.

Furthermore the IPU will be organizing two informal one hour side-events on 25 February 2010 on:

  • Parliaments and MDGs 4 and 5 (Conference Room A, 10:00-11:15am)
  • Political Violence against Women (Conference Room A, 3 to 4.15 pm)
Room facilities for informal side events do not allow for interpretation. The debates will therefore be held in English only.
