Rome, 11 June 2002

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) hosted the World Food Summit: five years later at its Rome headquarters from 10 to 13 June 2002 to review progress towards ending hunger. The Summit was originally scheduled for 5-9 November 2001 but has been delayed in the aftermath of the 11 September attacks in the United States.

IPU was instrumental in ensuring active parliamentary involvement in the World Food Summit back in 1996 and organised a parliamentary follow-up Conference in Rome in 1998. Committed to this approach, the IPU Council decided at its 170th session in Marrakech that the Inter-Parliamentary Union should organise a meeting of members of parliament attending the World Food Summit: five years later.

The one-day Parliamentary Meeting took place on the premises of the Italian Parliament in Rome on 11 June 2002 and was open to all MPs attending the Summit. Nearly 200 members of parliament from over 80 contries attended the meeting which allowed them to receive first-hand knowledge of the main issues and orientations of the Summit, as well as information on last-minute developments with regard to the preparation of the Summit's outcome documents. Participants were able to exchange views concerning parliamentary strategies for effective follow-up to the Summit decisions, in particular through the adoption of appropriate legislation and the mobilisation of adequate financial resources.

The provisional programme of the Parliamentary Meeting is reproduced below. Relevant documents (convocation, invitation, registration form) can be downloaded from this page in PDF format.
