What do citizens expect from their parliament? SPECIAL ISSUE: International Day of Democracy 2011
On 15 September, the IPU, parliaments, parliamentarians and citizens around the world will be marking the fourth International Day of Democracy, an event that was first established by the United Nations in 2007. This issue of the IPU e-Bulletin is devoted to this important event, with special focus on the main theme of this year's events: What do citizens expect from their parliament?

The choice of 15 September for the International Day of Democracy corresponds to the adoption in September 1997 by the IPU of a Universal Declaration on Democracy. That Declaration affirms the principles of democracy, the elements and exercise of democratic government, and the global scope of democracy.   [ Full story ... ]

To mark the 2011 International Day of Democracy the IPU is highlighting the theme What do citizens expect from their parliament? The theme derives from the preparation of the first Global Parliamentary Report, which examines the changing relations between citizens and parliaments around the world.   [ Full story ... ]

of Democracy
Parliaments around the world will be organizing International Day of Democracy events such as public debates, open days, television and radio programmes. The International Day will provide citizens with an opportunity to meet parliamentarians and discuss the state of democracy in their country.   [ Full story ... ]
