Prime Minister Robert Fico's Smer - Social Democracy (Smer-SD), which since 2012 had formed the first-ever single-party government in Slovakia, lost its absolute majority but remained the largest party. It took 49 seats in the 150-member National Council, down from 83. The opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), led by Mr. Richard Sulik, nearly doubled its seats from 11 to 21 and became the second largest party. During the election campaign, the major parties focused on migration, welfare system and the economy.
On 22 March, President Andrej Kiska (independent) tasked Mr. Fico with forming a new government. The following day, the President swore in a coalition government, comprising Smer-SD, the Slovak National Party (SNS) led by Mr. Andrej Danko, Most-Híd, an ethnic Hungarian party led by Mr. Bela Burgar and Network (#SIET) formed in June 2014 by Mr. Radoslav Procházka. The government has 30 days to obtain parliamentary approval. |
