Internship: Monitoring and reporting on events at the United Nations in New York (en anglais)

Overview 

Established in 1889, the Inter-Parliamentary Union is the world organization of parliaments – a global forum for parliamentary dialogue, cooperation and action.

The IPU would like to engage an intern to follow and report on debates and activities at the UN, assist with the organization of events, and support IPU work with the US Congress.

Tasks

Within delegated authority, tasks will include:

  • Attending meetings at the UN covering a variety of topics, such as disarmament, migration, development women’s issues, human rights;
  • Preparing notes on the debates for the New York and Geneva teams;
  • Conducting background research on issues and compiling issue briefs;
  • General assistance with IPU events or UN events involving members of parliament, as required;
  • Entering and managing information in a database of contacts.

You will gain experience in:

  • Following and reporting accurately on discussions and events at the United Nations;
  • Communicating to an audience of IPU staff in New York and Geneva, and to Members of Parliament around the world;
  • Planning and managing people in a UN setting for diverse Members of Parliament.

Requirements

Recent graduate with a BA or MA in Political Science, International Relations, Women’s Studies, Development Studies or a related field; current students who can demonstrate consistent availability will be considered.

  • Fluent in English; proficiency in other languages (French, Spanish, Arabic) would be an asset
  • Exceptional organization skills and attention to detail;
  • Knowledge of US politics an asset;
  • Ability to work independently and produce reports in a timely fashion;
  • Ability to get along well with others, particularly in a multi-cultural setting.

Timeline: Flexible, ideally starting in early December. The internship is expected to run for a period of three months which can be extended to a maximum of six months

Note: only candidates with legal residence (green card; work visa) or equivalent authorization to pursue a remunerated internship in the USA will be considered.

Location: IPU Office of the Permanent Observer to the UN, New York, USA.

Reporting: The intern will work under the supervision of the Permanent Observer and Senior Advisor v

Working hours: 37.5 hours per week (with flexibility)

Remuneration: A monthly allowance of US$1000
