Activating a Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly Devoted to Disarmament

London
United Kingdom

Summary

09:30 – 16:30 BST / 10:30 – 17:30 CEST

In a context of increasing international tensions combined with steadily growing global military expenditures surpassing an annual US$ 2 trillion in 2021, contemporary global trends are beginning to paint a worrying picture. This situation demands focused, efficient, and multilateral commitments to disarmament and non-proliferation to avoid the escalation of conflicts and offer protection not only to populations already impacted by armed violence but also to safeguard the future of the planet.

The IPU is closely coordinating with the Strategic Concept for Removal of Arms and Proliferation (SCRAP Weapons) to encourage the activation of a fourth special session of the United Nations General Assembly devoted to Disarmament.

The conference will comprise talks, round-table discussions and Q&A sessions with the audience. Speakers will include representatives from national governments and international organisations, as well as leaders from non-governmental organisations and religious groups from around the world.

Objectives:

  1. Raise awareness about the disarmament agenda and promote the activation of a fourth special session of the United Nations General Assembly devoted to Disarmament.
  2. Highlight the role of Parliaments and parliamentarians as key stakeholders of the disarmament efforts on the international scene.
  3. Share good practices and perspectives relating to disarmament from a multitude of stakeholders.

The full programme and the concept note for the event can be found in the documents section.

The conference will be held in hybrid mode in English and French through simultaneous interpretation.
