The IPU is committed to respecting the privacy of the people it engages with. This privacy statement explains how we may collect and process your information as a result of your visit to IPU websites, digital platforms or mobile applications.
IPU websites
In general, you can browse IPU websites without telling us who you are or revealing personally identifiable information.
However some anonymous information is collected by a web analytics service provided by Google, Inc. ("Google") to help analyze the use of the website. The information generated by the cookies about the use of the website - standard internet log information (including your IP address) and visitor behaviour information in an anonymous form - is transmitted to and stored by Google. We anonymize your IP address before sending it to Google.
In accordance with its Privacy Shield Certification, Google declares that it complies with the EU-US Privacy Shield Framework. Google may transfer the information collected by Google Analytics to third parties where required to do so by law, or where such third parties process the information on Google's behalf. According to the Google Analytics terms of service, Google will not associate the data subject’s IP address with any other data held by Google.
The IPU collects and publishes parliamentary data on its websites, including personal information about parliamentarians such as their name, gender and age. This information is made available either by consent or is taken from publicly available sources.
IPU mobile applications
We collect both personal and sensitive data to process participant registrations during IPU events and to provide, improve and personalize the services offered through official IPU apps. The types of data we may collect include:
- Personal data: Name, email address, contact details, job title and organization.
- Sensitive data (if applicable): Disability status (for logistical purposes), and any other special requests or preferences provided during event registration.
- Usage data: Information about how you interact with the app, including your registration status, event preferences and other details related to the event.
We may share your personal and sensitive data with trusted third parties involved in event organization and execution, such as a dedicated service provider, who may assist us in processing registrations, providing event-related services and ensuring accessibility. These third parties are contractually obliged to handle your data securely and comply with applicable data protection laws including the IPU personal data protection policy and procedures.
We retain your personal and sensitive data only as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected, including in line with legal or regulatory requirements. When your data is no longer needed, we will securely delete or anonymize it. You have the right to request the deletion or correction of your personal data at any time. If you wish to request access to, or deletion of, your event application account, you may contact the IPU at [email protected]. Such requests will be processed within 72 hours of receipt.

Use of image and sound recordings
By participating in any IPU assembly or event, you acknowledge that photographs, voice recordings and video recordings may be taken, which may include images and recordings of you. You consent that any such images, voice recordings, video recordings and any personal attributes may be used by the IPU solely for legitimate purposes , including but not limited to promoting, documenting and reporting on the event and use in materials on official websites, social media channels, and other communications, such as publications and promotional content.

Please note that general group and crowd shots, where individuals are not the main focus, will still be retained. Opting out applies only to personal, close-up images where you are the main subject.
IPU’s mailing lists
By providing us with your email address, you acknowledge that the IPU will process your personal data for the purpose of keeping you informed about parliaments, the state of democracy generally, and the IPU’s activities.
In accordance with our privacy policy, you may withdraw your consent at any time by using the unsubscribe option in the footer of any email you receive from us, or by contacting us at [email protected].
We do not use your data for direct marketing of goods or services to subscribers.
MailChimp, a third-party service, manages the subscriptions to and distribution of IPU newsletters. We encourage you to read and ask questions regarding their privacy policy before you choose to provide information about yourself.
The IPU endeavours to protect the security and integrity of the information you provide by implementing technical safeguards designed to protect against loss, misuse, unauthorized access or disclosure, alteration or destruction. However, due to the open and global nature of the internet, these safeguards are not a guarantee. The IPU assumes no responsibility for guaranteeing the security of information.
Security
We do not share with any third party or use for commercial purposes any personally identifiable information provided via the IPU’s online resources. Any information provided to the IPU by users of the IPU’s online resources is held with the utmost care and security and will not be used in ways other than as set forth in this privacy statement, the IPU’s personal data protection policy and procedures or any relevant site-specific policies, or in any other ways to which the user has not explicitly consented. The IPU employs a range of technologies and security measures to protect the information maintained on our systems from loss, misuse, unauthorized access or disclosure, alteration, or destruction.
All our personnel who have access to, and are involved with the processing of, personal data are obliged to respect the confidentiality of official matters and comply with the IPU’s personal data protection policy.
Rights of Data Subjects (clause IV of the IPU personal data protection policy)
- Right to information and access: Any person will be entitled to request information about their Personal Data.
- Right to correction and deletion: A Data Subject may request the correction or deletion of Personal Data that is inaccurate, incomplete, unnecessary or excessive, and the IPU Secretariat should correct or delete the Personal Data, as applicable, without undue delay. However, data may be retained in its original form if it pertains to historical records or other auditable information.
- Right to portability: A Data Subject may at any time request a copy of their Personal Data (in an easily accessible format) and/or request to have their Personal Data transmitted from the IPU Secretariat to another data controller.
- Right to objection: Data Subjects may object at any time, on compelling legitimate grounds relating to their particular situation, to the processing of Personal Data concerning them.

The IPU websites contain links to external or third-party websites. These websites are not related to the IPU or under our control. The IPU is therefore not responsible for the privacy or security of personal information which may be collected or processed via external or third-party websites or used by their owners. The appearance of such external or third-party links on the website does not represent the IPU’s endorsement of, or affiliation with, them. We encourage you to be aware when you leave our site and to read the privacy statements of external or third-party websites.
Privileges and immunities
Nothing in or related to this privacy statement may be construed as a waiver, express or implied, of the privileges and immunities accorded to the IPU.
