The IPU facilitates parliamentary diplomacy and empowers parliaments and parliamentarians to promote peace, democracy and sustainable development around the world.
Nearly every country in the world has some form of parliament. Parliamentary systems fall into two categories: bicameral and unicameral. Out of 190 national parliaments in the world, 78 are bicameral (156 chambers) and 112 are unicameral, making a total of 268 chambers of parliament with some 44,000 members of parliament. IPU membership is made up of 180 national parliaments
Throughout the year, the IPU and its Members organize many events for parliamentarians to exchange good practices, acquire the latest information and identify avenues for action.

Within the context of Africa’s health security and financing for health, what role can parliamentarians from Africa and the EU play in ending AIDS? What is the impact of law and policies on the HIV response? What actions are needed to stop COVID-19, strengthen health systems and prepare for future pandemics?
UNAIDS, the European Parliament, the Pan-African Parliament, the IPU and UNITE are organizing this virtual session ahead of the EU-AU Summit on 17 and 18 February 2022. It will discuss the socio-economic impact of COVID-19 and how lessons learned from the HIV epidemic can be applied to future pandemic preparedness and response in Africa, while ensuring equitable economic recovery.
