Artificial intelligence

AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) and its rapid application across political, economic and social spheres offers potential benefits to humanity and the development sector. However, recent major advances also pose immediate risks to democracy, human rights and the rule of law that must be urgently addressed by legislators around the world.

AI-related risks range from democratic instability to ethical concerns, global peace and security, data protection, the revolutionization of warfare and, particularly alarmingly, potential extinction‑level events. These risks must be mitigated with a comprehensive and inclusive global response, particularly and specifically involving the Global South.

The potential impact of AI is currently outpacing efforts by parliamentarians and the international community to better understand and regulate a fast-changing and growing technological sector with a multitude of global implications.

IPU supports parliaments in their work on AI through a range of activities, including resolutions, convening multi-stakeholder dialogues, networking MPs from different countries, sharing experience and good practices and organizing capacity building for parliamentarians.

Through its Centre for Innovation in Parliament, IPU also co-create guidelines and good practices for the governance and use of AI in parliament by convening the technical experts who are leading work on AI in their parliaments.
