The IPU congratulates the United Nations on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations signed on 26 June 1945 in San Francisco, USA.
The Charter of the United Nations was born at end of the Second World War to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war. Over the years, the United Nations, its Member states and Secretariat have achieved much: mediating conflicts, saving lives with food and refuge, educating children and defending the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all, including equality for women and men.
These past 75 years, the IPU has worked alongside the UN and its agencies with whom it shares the same foundational values of promoting peace, sustainable development, democracy and human rights. The IPU brings a parliamentary dimension to UN decision-making processes, helping to include the people and their representatives, and ensuring that international commitments are translated into national realities.
Now more than ever, as we face the hard reality of growing inequality, poverty, hunger, armed conflict, terrorism, climate change and pandemics, as we try to build a better world for all, the IPU and its 179 Member Parliaments pledge their support to reinvigorate multilateralism, with a renewed commitment to making the UN more transparent and accountable to “the peoples” it was established to serve.
We wish the United Nations success in its work and look forward to continuing cooperation.
