Internship: IPU-UN Joint Programme on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism

Background

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is the world organization of national parliaments. It is the oldest political multilateral organization in the world, dating back to 1889. The IPU promotes the peaceful settlement of conflicts through political dialogue and negotiation. Its mission is to work for stronger parliaments and better democracies. Its current membership stands at 179 Member Parliaments.

The IPU offers paid internships for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students. Interns will be provided with the opportunity to contribute to the activities, research and analysis of the IPU-UN Joint Programme on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism, under the supervision of the Programme Manager.

Job description

The intern will be primarily responsible for providing assistance to the IPU team’s day-to-day work on countering terrorism and violent extremism. This covers communication, logistical and secretarial tasks as well as research and project support. Communication tasks include drafting correspondence in English and French, and editing reports and other publications or documents. As well as helping to organize events, the intern will assist with background research on a range of topics and carry out other ad hoc tasks.

This range of responsibilities will require the intern to be highly organized and independent, with the ability to communicate effectively.

Tasks include:

  • Programme assistance: Providing project-related logistical and administrative support, such as sending out invitations, registering participants and arranging travel and accommodation.
  • Research assistance: Conducting detailed background research related to counter-terrorism and violent extremism.
  • Administration: Providing secretarial and logistical support to the core team.
  • External communications: Contributing to incoming and outgoing correspondence.
  • Editing: Assisting with editing reports and publications and with background research.
  • Events organization: Assisting with the organization of events and in meetings.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications and experience

  • Advanced university degree in international relations, political science, law or a related field
  • Excellent command of English and French, additional knowledge of Arabic or Spanish would be an asset
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and French
  • Proven organizational skills; ability to manage and prioritize various task
  • Proven experience in research
  • Editing experience
  • Computer skills, including a good command of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work autonomously on tasks and projects
Location

The internship will be carried out at IPU Headquarters in Geneva.

Length of internship

The internship will start in the the second half of November until the end of May 2020.

Remuneration

A monthly allowance of up to CHF 1,000, pro rata the number of hours worked, will be paid towards living expenses.
