Internship- IPU Office of the Permanent Observer to the United Nations

The IPU Office of the Permanent Observer to the United Nations has an opening for a 3-6 month internship for a graduate student in the area of international relations, political science or public administration.

Overview

The IPU is the global organization of national parliaments. We promote democratic governance, institutions and values, working with parliaments and parliamentarians to articulate and respond to the needs and aspirations of the people. We work for peace, democracy, human rights, gender equality, youth empowerment and sustainable development through political dialogue, cooperation and parliamentary action. IPU membership includes 178 national parliaments.

The intern will assist with regular activities of the office, including:

  • follow designated meetings at the United Nations and prepare briefs,
  • help organize parliamentary meetings at the United Nations, including those around the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW23)
  • conduct research on major global issues - including peace-building and democratic practice, sustainable development and human rights.
  • outreach to US Congress.

You will gain experience:

• Following and reporting accurately on discussions and events at the UN

• Communicating with IPU staff in NY and Geneva, and with parliamentarians internationally

• Engaging Members of Congress where possible. 

Requirements:

• Graduate with a BA or MA in Political Science, International Relations, Law, Development Studies or related field; current students who can demonstrate consistent availability will be considered.

• Fluent in English, proficiency in an additional language (French, Spanish) an asset

• Exceptional organization skills and keen attention to detail

• Familiarity with US politics and operations on the Hill an advantage

• Ability to work independently and produce reports in a timely fashion

• Strong networking skills

Timeline: Starting in January 2023. The internship will run for three months and may be extended for another three months

Location: Virtual and in person in New York.

Reporting: The Intern will work under the supervision of the IPU Office at the United Nations, NY

Working hours: 37.5 hours per week (with flexibility)

Remuneration: A monthly allowance of US$1500 (pro-rated if less than 37.5 hours)
