Nearly every country in the world has some form of parliament. Parliamentary systems fall into two categories: bicameral and unicameral. Out of 190 national parliaments in the world, 78 are bicameral (156 chambers) and 112 are unicameral, making a total of 268 chambers of parliament with some 44,000 members of parliament. Engaging parliaments on human rights: Spotlight on economic, social and cultural rights

This online briefing will aim to provide parliamentarians with a deeper understanding of economic, social and cultural rights (ESCRs) and the related international human rights norms and standards; and to explore the implication of ESCRs for legislation and policy making; as well as to discuss the role of parliament in promoting and protecting ESCRs. It will also aim to provide information on the work of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) to support States, including their legislative, executive and judiciary.
