Nearly every country in the world has some form of parliament. Parliamentary systems fall into two categories: bicameral and unicameral. Out of 190 national parliaments in the world, 78 are bicameral (156 chambers) and 112 are unicameral, making a total of 268 chambers of parliament with some 46,000 members of parliament. You are invited to the launch of the preliminary version of the Indicators for democratic parliaments to the broader parliamentary community. This launch event will present the Indicators, their purpose, scope and use in assessment of parliamentary capacity and performance.
The Indicators for democratic parliaments are structured around generally agreed characteristics of strong institutions outlined in Sustainable Development Goal 16 and its targets 16.6 (Develop effective, accountable and transparent institutions at all levels) and 16.7 (Ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all levels), adapted to the institution of parliament.
The Indicators have been developed through a joint initiative of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and partner organizations: Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), European Commission and INTER PARES, National Democratic Institute (NDI), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UN Women, Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and Directorio Legislativo.
