Nearly every country in the world has some form of parliament. Parliamentary systems fall into two categories: bicameral and unicameral. Out of 190 national parliaments in the world, 78 are bicameral (156 chambers) and 112 are unicameral, making a total of 268 chambers of parliament with some 46,000 members of parliament. The 12th World Urban Forum (WUF) presents a strategic opportunity for strengthening multi-stakeholder, multi-sectoral and multi-governance level cooperation in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), in particular SDG 11 - Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. With cities being vital centers of culture, innovation and economic growth, sustainable urbanization remains crucial for preserving the legacy of civilizations.
Following the WUF theme on It All Starts at Home: Local Actions for Sustainable Cities and Communities, the Parliamentarians’ Roundtable will tackle the role of parliamentarians in facilitating legislation, policies, finance, advocacy and partnerships with direct impact on cities and communities within the context of urban-rural continuum. This event will offer a platform for parliamentarians and relevant stakeholders to collaborate and explore solutions to challenges affecting cities, communities and human settlements.
