Parliamentary session on strengthening the multilateral trading system through the equitable governance of work

Summary

15.00 to 16.00 (CEST)

The question of the role of labour rights in the framework of the WTO fuelled debates in the early days of the Organization but has become far less prominent since the 1996 Singapore Ministerial Conference. In recent years, the issue of labour rights has, however, made a comeback in bilateral and plurilateral Free Trade Agreements (such as those involving the EU, for example), where the ratification of certain ILO conventions is stipulated as a requirement. At the same time, recent trade agreements such as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) include very strong and novel provisions on labour rights.
