Nearly every country in the world has some form of parliament. Parliamentary systems fall into two categories: bicameral and unicameral. Out of 190 national parliaments in the world, 78 are bicameral (156 chambers) and 112 are unicameral, making a total of 268 chambers of parliament with some 46,000 members of parliament. This side-event is taking place in the context of the CSW69 (from 10 to 21 March 2025 in New York), which has as main focus the review and appraisal of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly. The review will include an assessment of current challenges that affect the implementation of the Platform for Action and the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women and its contribution towards the full realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In addition to this side event, the IPU is organizing, in cooperation with UN Women, its annual Parliamentary Meeting on Tuesday, 11 March 2025, from 10.00 to 13.00 and from 15.00 to 18.00 in the Trusteeship Council Chamber.
