Parliaments all over the world are celebrating the International Day of Parliamentarism and the IPU's anniversary!

This page lists the information that we have received to date about parliamentary events.

A

Afghanistan

On 5th July, as part of the IPU's 130th anniversary and International Day of Parliamentarism celebrations, the Speaker of Wolesi Jirga (House of People) Mr. Mir Rahman Rahmani invited members of the Wolesi Jirga (House of People) to attend a reception in Speaker’s House.

Mr. Rahmani spoke about  the importance of IPU’s work, which remained as relevant today as when it was first founded on 30 June 1889.  He called for the commitment of MPs to help the country to reach the Sustainable Development Goals. Mr. Rahmani also shared his experience in 141st Assembly in Belgrade, Serbia, where he led bilateral meetings, highlighting the importance of inter-parliamentary dialogue and cooperation in the uncertain times we face across the globe. The video "130 years in 130 seconds" was also shown during the celebrations.

Albania
A message from the Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, Mr. Gramoz Ruçi, for the International Day of Parliamentarism was published on the Parliament's website and Facebook page. A video with messages from both Deputy Speakers and three members of the Albanian IPU Group was published on the Parliament's Facebook page and on the dedicated TV channel, RTSH Kuvend. The Parliament also subtitled the IPU video, Discover 130 years of IPU history in 130 seconds, in Albanian.

The Parliament of Albania celebrated its centenary this year. On 29 June, a video of the centenary was published on the Parliament's Facebook page. 

Algeria

The Council of the Nation of Algeria issued a statement on the International Day of Parliamentarism. The Council also published the video, "Discover 130 years of IPU history in 130 seconds".

Andorra

The Parliament of Andorra recorded a video for International Day of Parliamentarism.

Azerbaijan
The International Day of Parliamentarism was celebrated in the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan at its session on 30 June. A video on the history of parliamentarism in Azerbaijan was shown during the session.

Bahrain

The Parliament of Bahrain commemorated the International Day of Parliamentarism with several events. The Speaker of the Council of Representatives Ms. Fawzia Bent Abdullah Zainal issued a statement for the Day. Content linked to the day was published on home page of the Council and on its social media accounts.

The Speaker of the Shura Council, Mr. Ali Bin Saleh Alsaleh, made a statement on the International Day. 

The Shura Council of Bahrain held a virtual symposium, The Monitoring and Legislative Role in Parliamentary Work, to support the activities of the IPU and promote parliamentary diplomacy. Participants included civil society institutions, and seminar was covered on social media. 

A study on the Efforts of the Council of Representatives and Shura Council in the Kingdom of Bahrain in light of the COVID-19 pandemic was sent to diplomatic missions.

Canada

The Parliament of Canada issued a news release on the International Day of Parliamentarism, and the Library of Parliament prepared a short piece for its website about Canada’s 130 years of engagement with the IPU.

India

The Parliament of India commemorated the International Day of Parliamentarism by telecasting a special message from the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Mr. Om Birla; a documentary on the International Day of Parliamentarism; a conversation with IPU President, Ms. Gabriela Cuevas Barron; and a conversation with the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha, Ms. Snehlata Srivastava.

Indonesia

In commemoration of International Day of Parliamentarism Day, the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia conducted a series of activities, mainly focusing on the role of parliament in realizing peace and upholding international law.

Morocco

On 30 June, the Speaker of the Moroccan Chamber of Representatives began the session by marking the International Day of Parliamentarism. Read more (in French).

Paraguay

The Speaker of the Senate of Paraguay sent a video message on the occasion of the International Day of Parliamentarism. 

Portugal
The International Day of Parliamentarism coincided with the 200th anniversary of the Portuguese Parliament. The Parliament issued a statement of the Speaker of Portugal, Mr. Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, to commemorate the International Day, IPU's anniversary and the Parliament's anniversary.

Russian Federation

The Upper House of the Russian Federation Parliament published a special statement reiterating its readiness to intensify ties with parliaments around the world and promoting dialogue as the only way to overcome challenges.

A special event dedicated to the International Day of Parliamentarism was organized on 30 June in the Federation Council by Mr. I. Umakhanov, the Vice Chairman of the Federation Council and Mr. K. Kosachev, the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

There was also a round table entitled International Day of Parliamentarism: Opportunities and mechanisms of parliamentary diplomacy where participants discussed ways to promote and develop parliamentary diplomacy.

Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum
Ms B. Sekgoma, Secretary General of the SADC Parliamentary Forum, made a statement on the International Day of Parliamentarism.

Timor-Leste

The Parliament of Timor-Leste produced a video about the country's achievements for the International Day of Parliamentarism.

Tunisia
The Parliament of Tunisia issued a statement for the International Day of Parliamentarism and the IPU's 131st anniversary.

U

Ukraine

The Ukraine Parliament launched a social media campaign to celebrate its 30th  anniversary this year.

United Kingdom

The British Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (BGIPU) has recorded a video for the occasion of the International Day of Parliamentarism on the importance of parliaments and democracy.

Uruguay

The new Speaker of the Uruguay Senate, Ms. Beatriz Argimón, congratulated the IPU on its anniversary in a video message.

 

Uzbekistan

First Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis and Director of the National Centre of Uzbekistan for Human Rights Dr. Akmal Saidov sent a congratulatory message to the President of the IPU on the 131st anniversary of the Organization.
