Nearly every country in the world has some form of parliament. Parliamentary systems fall into two categories: bicameral and unicameral. Out of 190 national parliaments in the world, 78 are bicameral (156 chambers) and 112 are unicameral, making a total of 268 chambers of parliament with some 44,000 members of parliament. The National People’s Congress of China will donate USD 1 million to the IPU for its work on countering terrorism and violent extremism. IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong and NPC Standing Committee Secretary General Yang Zhenwu signed the agreement today at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The IPU has welcomed the historic Inter-Korean Summit held on 27 April in the town of Panmunjom by both leaders, Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in. Congratulating the two leaders on this giant step towards peace and reconciliation of the Korean nation, IPU President, Gabriela Cuevas, invited both sides to pursue high-level dialogue at the parliamentary level at the House of Parliaments in Geneva under IPU auspices.

Yemen’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Abdel Malik Al-Mikhlafi, visited IPU HQ on 25 September. He met with IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong with whom he discussed the current situation in Yemen. The SG briefed him on the Organization‘s efforts to mobilize more resources for humanitarian assistance to the Yemeni people.
