The IPU strongly condemns the attempted coup in Niger that took place on 26 July, following reports that democratically elected president Mohamed Bazoum had been seized by guards inside his official residence and was being held prisoner with his family in Niamey.

Any change of government through force goes against the core principles of democracy. The IPU calls for respect for the rule of law and democratically elected institutions, as well as the maintenance of constitutional order.

The IPU is following the evolving situation in Niger closely and condemns in the strongest terms the growing trend of forceful interventions in political life in the region.
