Geneva AI Governance Week – Ensuring parliaments are represented in international AI governance

-

Geneva, Switzerland

Summary

In early July 2026, Geneva will host the largest concentration of international artificial intelligence (AI) governance activity to date. Three major events will be held in one week at the Palexpo convention centre: the inaugural Global Dialogue on AI Governance, the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2026, and the AI for Good Global Summit. The frameworks, standards and common understandings that emerge from these processes will set the terms within which domestic AI legislation and national oversight operate.

The IPU, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), is organizing three parliamentary sessions across the week:

  • Global Dialogue on AI Governance: Parliamentary oversight for increased transparency and accountability of AI. This official side event will examine how parliaments exercise oversight to strengthen the transparency and accountability of AI systems. Proposed for Tuesday, 7 July, pending confirmation.
  • AI for Good Global Summit: Harnessing AI for Good: The parliamentary role. This panel discussion will address the contribution parliaments make to national AI strategies, from formulation through to oversight. Confirmed to take place on Tuesday, 7 July, 11:30–12 noon.
  • WSIS Forum: High-level parliamentary dialogue on digital governance. This dialogue will bring parliamentarians together with international partners to consider how legislatures are shaping digital and AI governance, and the key role they can play in implementation of the WSIS agenda. Confirmed for Friday, 10 July, 10:00–11:00.

These sessions build on the IPU's standing commitments on AI: the October 2024 IPU resolution on the impact of AI on democracy, human rights and the rule of law, the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Parliaments and responsible AI, adopted in November 2025, and the April 2026 motion on Advancing parliamentary action on AI, which calls on parliaments to engage actively with international AI governance and to align domestic legislation with evolving international standards.

Parliamentarians attending the Geneva events are invited to contact the IPU at [email protected], to identify opportunities to take part as speakers and discussants.
