The IPU facilitates parliamentary diplomacy and empowers parliaments and parliamentarians to promote peace, democracy and sustainable development around the world.
Every country in the world has some form of parliament. Parliamentary systems fall into two categories: bicameral and unicameral. Out of 193 countries in the world, 79 are bicameral and 113 are unicameral, making a total of 272 chambers of parliament with over 46,000 members of parliament. The HLPF is the United Nation’s main hub to track the implementation of the landmark Sustainable Development Goals - the world’s most ambitious agenda to overcome poverty and inequality while preserving the sustainability of life on our finite planet.
Throughout the year, the IPU and its Members organize many events for parliamentarians to exchange good practices, acquire the latest information and identify avenues for action.
The IPU has been collecting data on parliaments since its inception in 1889, including information on women’s participation in politics since 1945. In this section, discover the IPU's knowledge bank for and about parliaments.
This international parliamentary meeting, jointly organized by the IPU and the Parliament of the Kingdom of Morocco, will take place on 6 and 7 December 2018 in the Parliament building in Rabat. The event will offer an opportunity for parliamentarians to learn about the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, which will be adopted on 10 and 11 December in Marrakech, and about the specific actions and tools available to parliaments to implement the commitments contained in this document.
