Nearly every country in the world has some form of parliament. Parliamentary systems fall into two categories: bicameral and unicameral. Out of 190 national parliaments in the world, 78 are bicameral (156 chambers) and 112 are unicameral, making a total of 268 chambers of parliament with some 44,000 members of parliament. Ten years after the first G20 Summit, Argentina will be hosting the 13th G20 Leaders’ Summit in November 2018. The theme of the Summit is Building consensus for fair and sustainable development with a focus on three key issues: the future of work, the fight against corruption and gender equality.
For the first time, a parallel summit of G20 Speakers of Parliament, the P20, will take place, organized by the IPU and the National Congress of Argentina. The Summit aims to provide G20 Speakers and other invited parliaments with expertise on building a consensus for fair and sustainable development that would inform their work on this issue.
Speakers will receive updates on the implementation of G20 recommendations so that they can identify challenges and decide on the necessary parliamentary action. The Buenos Aires Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit will also explore possibilities to strengthen cooperation between the G20 and other countries, and harmonize policies, especially in sustainable development.
The Summit will be preceded by a Parliamentary Forum on 31 October and 1 November.
