The 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will be held in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania, from 5 to 9 October 2026, bringing together hundreds of lawmakers from around the world for a week of high-level parliamentary diplomacy.
Hosted by Bunge la Tanzania, the National Assembly of Tanzania, the focus of the Assembly will be on Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all.
Highlights of the Assembly will include:
- The expected affiliation of Naoero, growing the IPU to 184 Member Parliaments.
- An expected resolution on parliamentary strategies to promote the rights and empowerment of people living with disabilities.
- Meetings of all the IPU’s parliamentary bodies, including its four Standing Committees, the Forums of Women and Young Parliamentarians, the Committee on Middle East Questions and the Task Force for the peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine.
- Panel discussions and workshops for parliamentarians on a wide range of subjects including: military artificial intelligence, oversight of extractive industries, mental health, AI and children’s rights, AI and the future of work, healthy food in a changing climate, protecting mountain and ocean ecosystems, reviewing the Charter of the United Nations, and strengthening maritime security in times of conflict.
- The award of the 2026 Cremer-Passy Prize, the MP of the year award, to a legislator with an exceptional record on human rights.
The Assembly will end with the election of a new IPU President, the political head of the IPU, to replace Dr. Tulia Ackson of the United Republic of Tanzania, whose three-year term comes to an end in October.
At the time of writing, there are three candidates on the ballot:
- Ms. Sahiba Gafarova, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan;
- Mr. Milton Dick, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Australia;
- Mr. Rojo Edwards Silva, a Senator from Chile.
