Nearly every country in the world has some form of parliament. Parliamentary systems fall into two categories: bicameral and unicameral. Out of 190 national parliaments in the world, 78 are bicameral (156 chambers) and 112 are unicameral, making a total of 268 chambers of parliament with some 44,000 members of parliament. Dr Andy Williamson (Senior researcher at CIP, the IPU’s Centre for Innovation in Parliament) notes that there is nothing new about AI. But we have certainly embarked on a new level of AI integration. Technology can now engage with us directly, generate new content and predict outcomes. This could transform a wide variety of settings, including parliaments.
The Chamber of Deputies of Italy is embracing and promoting the benefits of a modern workplace, showing how hybrid technologies can support more efficient working practices and make the legislative processes more resilient.
In the Italian Senate, amendments are sometimes used as a “filibustering” tool. Here, we look at how the parliamentary secretariat is using AI to help manage legislative documents, including amendments, and to prevent the legislative process from stagnating.
