Parliamentary leaders and representatives from 32 developing countries are in Beijing this week to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the affiliation of the National People’s Congress (NPC) to the IPU.
The celebration is taking place during the annual Interregional Seminar on the Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals for Parliaments of Developing Countries.
Jointly organized by the IPU and the NPC, the regional seminar provides parliaments from developing countries with the opportunity to share experiences and good practices on how to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed participants including IPU President, Tulia Ackson, and IPU Secretary General, Martin Chungong.
This is the sixth year that the NPC has hosted parliamentarians from developing countries for the annual seminar.
Themes this year included peace and stability for development, more inclusive economic globalization, promoting cultural exchanges and mutual learning, and the role of democracy in modernization.
On the sidelines of the event, Mr. Liu Qi, Secretary General of the NPC Standing Committee, signed a donor agreement to support the IPU’s work on countering terrorism and violent extremism.
