The IPU and the National People’s Congress (NPC) of China today signed a donation agreement to further strengthen their partnership in promoting parliamentary action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The funds will support some of the IPU’s SDG programmes and events for parliamentarians with a focus on capacity-building in developing countries.
The framework agreement was signed by Anda Filip, IPU Secretary General, and Liu Qi, Secretary General of the Standing Committee of the NPC. The signing took place on the sidelines of the eighth Interregional Seminar on the Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals for Parliaments of Developing Countries.
Co-organized by the IPU and the NPC, the annual seminar brings together representatives from developing countries to exchange best practices and explore ways to accelerate progress towards the SDGs, including strengthening action on climate change and artificial intelligence.
The agreement formalizes China’s five-year voluntary contribution of US$ 1.5 million to the IPU, pledged by Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, on the margins of the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, held in Geneva, Switzerland in July 2025.
