The National People’s Congress (NPC) of China has announced a renewed five-year voluntary contribution of US$1.5 million to the IPU. The funding will support the IPU’s work on sustainable development and climate action.

The announcement was made in Geneva during a bilateral meeting held on the margins of the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament. NPC Standing Committee Chairman Zhao Leji held talks with IPU President Tulia Ackson and Secretary General Martin Chungong. The discussions underscored the importance of international dialogue between legislative bodies at a time of heightened global tensions.

The IPU leaders welcomed the renewed donation, describing it as essential to the Organization’s continued relevance and impact. They acknowledged China’s active role in promoting multilateralism and supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Chinese Speaker praised the IPU’s growing influence, emphasizing its efforts to champion democracy as a means of fostering shared prosperity and international cooperation.

This fresh agreement follows the 40th anniversary of the NPC’s affiliation to the IPU. The two bodies have co-hosted the Interregional Seminar on the Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals for Parliaments of Developing Countries for the past six years. This annual seminar brings together representatives from developing nations, providing a platform to exchange best practices and accelerate progress on the SDGs.
