The IPU is co-organizing two events during Geneva Peace Week, which this year focuses on “Prevention and effective pathways for implementation”.
On 8 November, there will be a panel discussion on Supporting National Capacities for Conflict Prevention: What Works, What Doesn’t. The event is being co-organized with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Department of Political Affairs and the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue. Panellists will focus on the role of national and local mediators in building and sustaining peace. The panel consists of Senator Laura Rojas of Mexico, President of the IPU Standing Committee on Peace and International Security; Stan Veitsman, UN Peace and Development Advisor in Ukraine and representative of the Joint UNDP-DPA Programme; Valeriy Shtaba, a local mediator from Ukraine; and Paul Dziatkowiec, Project Manager for Ukraine at the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue. The moderator is David Lanz, Head of the Mediation programme at swisspeace.
On 10 November, the IPU, Rotary International and the Rotary Peace Groupe Lake Geneva Region are co-organising a workshop on Creating Sustainable Peace by Implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Participants will look at how best to implement the SDGs to achieve sustainable peace. Speakers include Martin Chungong, IPU Secretary General; Senator Laura Rojas of Mexico; John Hewko, Rotary International Secretary General; and Gerard McHugh, President of Conflict Dynamics International. The workshop will be moderated by H.E. Yvette Stevens, Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone to the United Nations at Geneva.
