Creating a Future for All: Climate Justice and Peacebuilding - A Geneva Peace Week Event

Geneva
Switzerland

Summary

11:15 - 12:30, Room IX, Palais des Nations

Climate change is already having disastrous consequences worldwide, and its impacts are most directly borne by the most vulnerable social groups due to their lack of resources and capacity to build resilience. Rising anthropogenic greenhouse gases, unless radically reduced, will lead to existential crises for human communities and the natural ecosystems they depend on. Furthermore, the consequences of climate change, such as competition over limited natural resources, will contribute to rising conflict within and between communities. In the absence of robust governance, this may lead to increasing violence, migration and humanitarian emergencies.

The climate justice movement aims to raise awareness of these issues, so that vulnerable groups are better protected from the consequences of climate change, including threats to their security, and that they are included as agents of change in climate mitigation and adaptation, as well as conflict prevention and resolution efforts.

This event aims to give voice to experts in climate justice, vulnerable populations, youth, and decision makers working to include climate justice concerns in their national and international policies.
