Nearly every country in the world has some form of parliament. Parliamentary systems fall into two categories: bicameral and unicameral. Out of 190 national parliaments in the world, 78 are bicameral (156 chambers) and 112 are unicameral, making a total of 268 chambers of parliament with some 44,000 members of parliament. The adaptation of parliaments in a time of pandemic
In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic dominated our lives and presented multiple challenges to parliaments. Parliaments around the world have responded in interesting and innovative ways.
This joint IPU-ASGP online meeting will allow Secretaries General to exchange experiences with their peers in other parliaments. By discussing the challenges and the solutions that parliaments have adopted, participants should enhance their own knowledge and come away with new ideas that could be useful for their parliament.
The discussion will be structured around two themes. Each participant will have the opportunity to present, in two or three minutes, the principal measures put in place by their parliament
- Physical adaptions made by Parliaments.
- Adaptations to the exercise of constitutional duties by Parliaments.
In order to allow participation from all regions, two identical sessions will be held on the same day. Participants should choose which session they will attend when registering for the event.
