Parliamentary Solidarity for Refugee Inclusion in Education

Summary

Webinar - 13 November 2-3.30 pm CET

The International Parliamentary Network for Education (IPNEd), the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) the San Remo International Institute for Humanitarian Law and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) are convening a high-level online forum for parliamentarians on the urgent need to invest in the inclusion of refugees in national education systems worldwide to build a better future and prevent a generational catastrophe. This convening of parliamentarians is taking place at a critical time in the lead-up to the Global Refugee Forum in December 2023.

The session will include key speakers on financing and inclusion policies in national education systems, the Global Compact on Refugees, and the Global Refugee Forum. It is an opportunity to address challenges and explore how parliamentary action can support burden- and responsibility-sharing as embedded in the Global Compact on Refugees.

The main objective of the webinar is to facilitate knowledge-sharing amongst parliamentarians and to work towards a solutions-oriented agenda to make inclusion in education a reality in the overall response to the global forced displacement crisis.

The event particularly seeks to:

  • Increase awareness of the opportunities and challenges for refugee inclusion in national education systems as well as identify synergies for matching demands between donor and host countries.
  • Draw a set of recommendations for parliamentarians on how to increase and improve financing for refugee inclusion in national education systems as well as develop targeted strategies following the Global Refugee Forum.
  • Increase understanding on Global Compact on Refugees and processes associated with the Global Refugee Forum.

Panellists include:

  • Ms Gillian Triggs, UN Assistant Secretary General, UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Protection
  • Rt Hon Vicky Ford, MP United Kingdom, Co-Chair of IPNEd & Former Minister for Development
