The IPU facilitates parliamentary diplomacy and empowers parliaments and parliamentarians to promote peace, democracy and sustainable development around the world.
Nearly every country in the world has some form of parliament. Parliamentary systems fall into two categories: bicameral and unicameral. Out of 190 national parliaments in the world, 78 are bicameral (156 chambers) and 112 are unicameral, making a total of 268 chambers of parliament with some 44,000 members of parliament. IPU membership is made up of 180 national parliaments
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) was constituted under the United Nations Charter to help nations settle disputes peacefully in accordance with international law.
Throughout the year, the IPU and its Members organize many events for parliamentarians to exchange good practices, acquire the latest information and identify avenues for action.
The IPU has been collecting data on parliaments since its inception in 1889, including information on women’s participation in politics since 1945. In this section, discover the IPU's knowledge bank for and about parliaments.
This event will highlight the key messages of the Declaration of the Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament (5WCSP) hosted virtually by the IPU and the Parliament of Austria on 19 and 20 August 2020.
The Speakers’ Declaration on parliamentary leadership for more effective multilateralism that delivers peace and sustainable development for the people and planet creates common ground among parliaments to tackle current global challenges in a spirit of cooperation and solidarity. It further provides a parliamentary perspective on multilateralism within the context of the growing relationship between the United Nations, parliaments and the IPU over the past twenty years, and as reflected in UNGA resolution A/74/L.85 adopted on 4 September.
In the context of ongoing UN reforms, how can parliaments and the IPU bring the voices of the people they represent into UN decision-making processes and contribute to a stronger UN-led multilateral system? How can the UN and the IPU work together more effectively to implement international commitments on peacebuilding, sustainable development, democracy and human rights?
