IPU leadership statement on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza

Gaza city

MAHMUD HAMS / AFP - Gaza City on 12 October.

The IPU is increasingly alarmed by the unfolding catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

We reiterate our utter condemnation of any violence against civilians. The acts of terror committed by Hamas have done nothing to help the Palestinian people. These acts are deeply inhumane. We call on Hamas to immediately release all Israeli hostages.

This conflict is causing terrible human suffering.

Hundreds of people have been killed, with thousands injured and displaced, including women, children and the elderly.

Food, water, fuel and medical supplies are running dangerously low in the Gaza Strip, compounding an already dire situation in one of the most densely populated places on Earth.

We appeal for a humanitarian truce. We call on all sides to pause.

We urge the authorities to allow urgent relief, essential supplies and aid workers to enter Gaza safely.

The IPU Committee on Middle East Questions will meet in the coming days in an emergency session to advise the IPU on its response to the current crisis.

Duarte Pacheco, IPU President and Martin Chungong, IPU Secretary General.
