Junior Consultant- Peace and Security / Executive Office

The Junior Consultant will work directly with the Senior Adviser to the Secretary General and the Executive Office to support the work of the Office in the areas of peace, security, science and technology, and other related fields. 

Deliverables:

The consultant will assist the Senior Adviser to the Secretary General and the Executive Office with the following deliverables:

  • Provide overall administrative support to the Senior Adviser to the Secretary General;
  • Manage the Senior Adviser’s agenda; make appointments and maintain a diary of such appointments; prepare daily calendar of events, including official engagements, missions and absences; keep the Senior Adviser abreast of all engagements and other administrative business; prepare mission files;
  • Conduct research, attend meetings and draft reports for IPU activities in the areas of science and technology, peace, security, national reconciliation and dialogue;
  • Edit reports in English and prepare data;
  • Assist in designing new projects and set up mechanisms for their effective follow-up;
  • Draft the agenda, convocation, background documents and reports of the Working Group on Science and Technology, the Committee on Middle East Questions, the High-Level Advisory Group on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism, and all documents relevant to the IPU Science for Peace Schools;
  • Provide technical and logistical support for workshops and meetings;
  • Propose and develop project management tools aimed at facilitating work in the area of peace and security;
  • Prepare PowerPoint presentations and other communication material on programme activities;
  • Draft a regular bulletin for the Secretary General on developments in the Middle East;
  • Liaise with external partners to advance the agenda of the counter-terrorism programme, the projects for peace, and the science and technology programme;
  • Any other deliverables as many be deemed necessary.

Results expected:

High-quality outputs; speedy delivery of services. Excellent research and drafting skills, production of high-calibre reports and efficiency in providing general administrative and logistical support to Senior Adviser to the Secretary General. A high level of discretion, political tact and commitment is essential.

Work implies frequent interaction with the following:

  • The Executive Office and the Secretariat staff in general
  • Specialized IPU bodies and committees
  • External partners and institutions (UN experts and other intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, such as CERN)

Qualifications:

Education: Advanced university degree in international relations, political science, law or a related field.

Language:

A perfect command of written and spoken English, and an excellent knowledge of French and other UN languages, preferably Spanish. Knowledge of other languages will be an advantage.

Experience:

At least 1 year of work experience in a similar or relevant field.

Other skills:

Previous experience working in a parliamentary environment, including the IPU, will be a distinct advantage. Excellent editing skills are necessary for this position

Contract length and conditions:

The consultancy is for the period of 21 June 2021 to 31 December 2021, with the possibility of extension subject to review of performance and the availability of funds.  

Location:

Although the position will be based at IPU Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the consultant can begin his/her work remotely, with the requirement of physical presence in the office depending on the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Remuneration:

This consultancy is being offered at CHF 5,500 per month.
