The IPU 144th Assembly has decided to debate a last-minute emergency resolution Peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine, respecting international law, the Charter of the United Nations and territorial integrity, submitted by the delegation of New Zealand on 21 March.
The emergency resolution received a large majority of the votes cast in a system based on criteria including country population, number of delegates present and gender inclusion. According to the IPU Statutes and Rules, only one emergency item may be included on the agenda at any given Assembly.
Two other emergency resolutions were considered by the Assembly which comprises hundreds of parliamentarians from some 120 countries:
- Russian and Belarusian aggression against Ukraine submitted on 16 March
- The role of parliaments in supporting a peaceful resolution to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, submitted on 20 March
